A coach is inquisitive and listens deeply to what’s said and not being said!

Coaching is an umbrella term for a variety of interventions that support personal and professional development. Coaching encompasses practices that support the growth and development in others. Coaching creates pathways for accountability.

Coaching has many components that lend themselves to stronger supervision and healthy working culture. Integrating the qualities of deep listening, reflection, assessment and accountability into organizational culture benefits staff and management. Specifically as an approach to supervision, finding ways to train staff to have a coaching approach has led to higher retention and employee satisfaction. I have worked with teams to create customized train the trainer programs that integrate organizational values in a practical way. Culture is about more than policies, it is how we treat each other and feel about the work. Investing in a customized program makes sense to make shifts in staff culture. Be sure to click any of the links above to know more about customized supervision and changing conditions.

I began coaching 12 years ago.

My first exposure was a weekend intensive for Leadership Development professionals who wanted to learn new ways to support executives to improve business impact. Coaching skills are foundational to strong emotional intelligence and support cultures of healthy communication.

When did you last deeply listen for understanding? How have you supported others by creating accountability steps together? Working with dozens of groups, I’ve developed workshops to transform organizational culture by incorporating “coaching skills” into supervision and communication procedures.

Some of my favorite work to do is coaching with leaders one on one. I coach because I see leadership in everyone.

Working to unlearn old habits and refresh life with updated intentions is work that requires support. I typically work with six leaders on a bi weekly basis per quarter. We begin with a meeting to connect and learn more about each other and the work. Next “coachees” complete a pre-coaching assessment that explores identity, current practices, values, motivation and other useful data.  Fifty minute coaching sessions incorporate mindfulness practices, somatic expression, explore “parts” and “shadow” work. Sessions often incorporate trying new framework and tools, and self work between sessions.

2. Coaching for Performance

Coaching for performance is a five session series of one on one coachings that develop these foundational professional skills:

  1. Building Connection and Reflection:

The ability to self reflect and assess one’s strengths and challenges is foundational to success. Learning practices to better understand ourselves serves the work.

  2. Explicit Systems for Personal Success:

A review of systems for time and project management supports individual performance. Sharing tools that affirm our individual leadership styles is key.

  3. Finding Alignment with our Why:

Purpose work is essential to success in difficult times. We develop connections to how our lives inform our values, improving resilience and clarity in our work.

  4. Communicating Well with a Team:

How and what you say has a direct impact on performance. We explore tendencies in feedback , listening for understanding and navigating group dynamics.

  5. Assessment and Evaluation:

Strong performance requires data and systems for tracking impact. We share tools and support the creation of ‘best fit’ practices and with’ self as tool’ generate a progress report.

Specifically as an approach to supervision, I develop coaching trainings for staff within the context of an organization’s values. Supervisors who use a coaching approach build stronger teams with higher retention and employee satisfaction. When teams are looking to address challenges between individuals, investing in supervision skills has a significant impact. As an owner and consultant with Venture with Purpose for the last five years, I worked with many organizations that struggled with underperformance from staff.

Understanding that human capital is the most valuable resource of any organization, investing in individual leadership development brings great returns in productivity and employee satisfaction.

Over years, I found that I was often addressing similar challenges amongst dozens of organizations. Often leadership used resources to hire strong candidates, only to have them struggle and underperform in their work.

With a team of talented coaches, we developed a tool to support the development of foundational skills. In response I designed a framework “ Coaching for Performance” and have trained coaches to use it to improve the performance of struggling staff. This is a more prescriptive form of coaching infused with skill development.

I’ve always found that investing in development has a positive impact compared to a punitive approach with under performers.
